Alexis

Research Lab

Mars State University Space Station

I, Alexis, sat in the study room adjacent to the research lab with Alicia. There was artificial gravity created by the motion of the space station. We ate food made on Mars in factories that were greenhouses in which lots of food was made - fast. The transportation of food was not stopping - whoever was taking down the station wasn’t stopping the flow of food from arriving at the school. The temperature control was damaged from some of the fighting, but Alexis had fixed it within the first few minutes of that happening - they couldn’t have the station getting cold and freezing everyone to death. The mechanical infrastructure of the station was beneath the research lab at the bottom of the facility so Alexis had no problem taking the elevator down there and fixing it. She took Amber and Alicia and didn’t get attacked by anyone - no one was down there making sure that the space station was doing okay. The temperature control panel had taken damage from a stray bullet. Bullets weren’t strong enough to penetrate the hull of the space station, fortunately, but they could do damage to the station’s systems.

Several meteorites hit the station because no one was making sure it was okay and in orbit and being managed. They had slammed into the station, hurting the hull and doing minor damage. One person’s apartment had been exposed to the outside atmosphere, killing someone who had no way to know about or survive that particular fate. That person - whose name Alexis didn’t know - just got really, really unlucky and died in outer space, wondering what the fuck had happened to the breathable atmosphere and the space station.

The transports available to go to other stations - like Mars U. and Mars the planet - were running out. There were two left. Several had left, one for supplies to get them food and another taken by Phil Jones to go to Mars U. to try to get help and to get a message out. Two shuttles still sat in their docking bays, available to be piloted out of the station. Alexis knew how to pilot either one but didn’t want to do it - she wanted to save the station, not run away from it.

The lights went out.

Nothing worked for a second.

“Air’s still working,” Alexis said. “Hello?”

“Hi,” Alicia said. She turned on the light on her phone and saw Alexis. “Hey, caught you in the dark.”

“Hey,,” I said. “They are taking control of the station’s systems. That’s not good.”

“So how do we take them back?” Alicia asked.

Music started to play - loud, angry techno music. Industrial techno music played - deep bass notes and loud screams played at a loud level throughout the station. Alexis took out a lamp from a side closet somewhere that gave off a little bit of light, but the room was still fairly dark.

“Psychological warfare,” Alicia said.

“Fear and terror,” I said. “It works.
